Tips & Tricks for the DREADED CAKE FACE: Always make sure that your face makeup is very soft and smooth. Some people say that cakey face is better than acne because they say that they cannot see their acne. However, if you put your makeup on correctly, you will not see acne and you will not have cake face. You will have perfect and smooth skin. Cakey means blotchy and patchy and drying. There are many ways that your face can get cakey or patchy. It also kind of means that if you have dry skin and you pack on foundation it will literally peel off and NO ONE WANTS THAT!!!!!! There could be too much foundation or concealer or both on your face. The foundation can also be too thick. You could also have too much powder foundation on your face. Your face might be really dry too. When your face looks cakey, it will probably have some pores or a couple spots of acne. If you have both foundation and concealer that is making you cakey, it will just flake off. It would also be helpful if you had a damp sponge spritzed with either water or setting spray/mist.

You can kind of tell in this picture that the foundation that she used that day was very chalky and since I have dry skin I have to watch out for certain types of foundations. She also could have applied a thick layer of full coverage foundation.

Never apply a thick layer of FULL coverage foundation. If you want to apply a full coverage foundation, make sure it is a thin-based liquid foundation because then you’ll have an easier time blending the foundation into the face.

Dry skin + chalky foundation= bad news bears.

Cakey face during the summer: It’s kind of the same situation just more of it. Just make sure you don’t pack it all up in the same area because you’ll end up with dry patches in certain areas. Such as, the corners of the nose and corners of the mouth.

EX: It might be a good idea to have pressed powder in your “travel make up bag” or in your purse. Or if you’re like me, you will just carry it with you ALL DAY LONG. However, the thing is to watch how much you are putting on your face of either pressed powder or powder foundation.

Now with setting spray you also have to watch because you don’t want to look like you just did your makeup then went to the gym and sweat it all off. Thats not good  either.

Matching Foundation

It will either turn orange or it will turn gray. If the foundation is too thick but its under 1 year old put 2 pumps of face oil in the foundation bottle and shake up for about 20-30 seconds and then continue on with the application. If you are trying to match your face makeup to your face. First, look at your wrist veins. If the veins are blue, you have cool undertones and you will use cool tone foundation, concealer, powders and even bronzer’s. If your veins are a green color, you have warm undertones. If your veins are a teal color. You will wear face makeup that is somewhere in the middle between warm and cool. That is the best way to match your face makeup. The first thing is blending: it can depend on the consistency and how thick the cream contour can be. Also, with powder contour it can blend easier than the cream contour. Also, while matching your foundation to the right shade make sure it doesn’t oxide on the face. Also, make sure that your foundation blends smoothly. There are several ways to fix that issue. Also when you are matching your skin color to a foundation in a store, make sure to 1. bring a compact mirror with you. 2. when you put in on your jaw area, GET OUT OF THE STORE AND INTO NATURAL LIGHTING!!!! So when you go outside you’ll be able to see how it actually looks on the face.

The best tools to use to apply foundation

The first way is to find the right tool to use whether it is a sponge, your fingers (make sure they are clean) or you can use a brush. For me personally, I use a sponge because it’s just easier for me to apply foundation. The sponge also provides more coverage and it also allows you to build up on the coverage of the foundation. I like to use 2 different types of sponges. 1. Wedge Sponge. 2. Beauty Blender Sponges.

  1. Wedge Sponge: Good for baking, cooking and carving and especially concealer.
  2. Beauty Blender: Good for Foundation & Powder & Blush
  3. Buffer Brush: Good for blending foundation, powder and bronzer. That will make it look air brushed.

Oxidation= foundation or concealer or any face products will turn orange or gray and it would look really bad. Oxidation is really bad because it would ruin the look of your makeup. Oxidation would also make the entire face makeup look patchy and chalky. That is when the color would look different. When you test a foundation in a store, make sure to go outside and test it in natural light. That will give the most accurate finish and color that you could be looking for.

All about ingredients in makeup products: It would be wise if you could do some research on some of the ingredients on skin products because some of the products have unusual ingredients and they could have a reaction on some people.

How do you know if you’re allergic to your makeup????  Your skin might burn, sting, itch, or get red right where you used the product. You might get blisters and have oozing, especially if you scratch at it. The other kind of reaction actually involves the immune system. Its called allergic contact dermatitis and symptoms can include redness, swelling, itching, and hives.

How to find your foundation match

Step 1: Discover your undertone= cool, warm, neutral undertone.

Cool= blues, purples and pinks.

Warm= oranges, yellows and golds.

Step 2: Choose your coverage= Light, medium and full coverage.

Light= Evens tone but allows your skin to shine through-for when you don’t want to lose those freckles.

Medium= Evens and conceals for a more polished, airbrushed look.

Full= Covers everything. But full does not have to mean heavy.

Step 3: Find your foundation type: Cream, Liquid, Mousse, Stick, BB Cream, Loose powder, Pressed powder and Tinted moisturizer.

Cream= Full or spot coverage

Liquid= Medium to full coverage

Mousse= Absorb oil & cover blemishes

Stick= Spot coverage & color correct

BB Cream= Sheer to full coverage

Loose Powder= Light coverage & shine control

Pressed Powder= On the go or finishing touches.

Tip for pressed powder: you need to do some research on the pressed powder you’re getting because you need to watch for what kind of skin the powder will work for.

Tinted Moisturizer= Sheer coverage

Step 4: Determine your shade.

Time to test. Swabbing a bit of foundation on your jawline totally works. But if you want to find your truest color match, blend out a bit on your nose and forehead too. The one that will truly match will disappear on your skin.

Foundation: Be sure that you can get the right color, formula and the right texture. The undertone has to match with your neck. Also, you want to make sure that the foundation is very smooth and not chalky. Foundation helps to even out the skin tone. Also, take care of any redness that the face might have.

The types are Liquid, Stick, Cream, Whipped, Gel, Powder, Cushion and Mousse.

Always make sure that you get foundation that is best for your skin type. So for instance, if you have dry skin. You do not want to get a matte finish foundation because it is just going to make you look more dry in the face. Instead, you might want to get a hydrating foundation that will do the following: Moisturize and bring a little glow to the face.

Concealer: Make sure the concealer is a little lighter than your skin tone. You would want to make sure that the concealer to be a little lighter because it makes your face looks brighter.

If the concealer is too dark, you either want to put a light powder over it. You can also mix a lighter shade of concealer with the dark shade. If it is too light, it is okay just go through your normal routine and then add a little more extra bronzer and contour to your face for some color and dimension.

The formulas are Liquid, Cream, Mousse, Powder, and Whipped.

Types of concealer:

Wand Concealer: are generally more sheer and can be used anywhere where light coverage is needed.

Tube Concealer: usually medium coverage and works well for slight blemishes.

Pot-Pan Concealer: heavy/full coverage and best for blemishes. Not under the eyes as it will look very cakey.

Powder: It can set the foundation so the foundation doesn’t look cakey or patchy. It would make the face look finished and not oily or greasy.

Pressed Powder and Loose Powder

Time to learn about Baking…. and NO not baking a cake. Baking your face. You can use any loose powder with a sponge or a big powder brush.  If you want a full coverage bake. You might want to use a sponge and kind of pack it on. But not to the point of cakey face. No one loves the cakey face. There is also a difference between baking your under eye area and setting your under eye area. Setting the under eye is simply making sure it does not slip or crease off of the face. When you bake it is not just setting, baking is when you put loose translucent powder on top of your concealer, and foundation allowing it up and set afterwards you dust off the powder and you have a pore less matte complexion.  Baking is for interviewing and performances and staging. Baking makes the skin not breathe. So that is why it is so great for those types of things. Baking can also help with contouring and highlighting. Baking is ideal when you have a TV shoot or a photo shoot. Then you won’t end up with a white cast on your face in the camera.

How to Bake Your Face: In depth details and Tips&Tricks

1. Hydrate your eye area. Apply eye cream around your eye area to hydrate your skin, minimizing the appearance of any fine lines or creases.

2. Apply a thick concealer under your eyes. While concealer usually contains oils and has a tendency to crease, it will not if it is set right. Apply it upward from the apples of your cheeks toward your temples all the way underneath your eye.

3. Coat on more concealer. So, you can skip this step and still get great results, but for lasting power, a sheer second coat can lock in the first formula. After you apply the second layer of concealer, blend it in again with your damp makeup sponge. Make sure to cover and smooth out all the creases before setting your concealer in the next step

4. Dust on translucent powder. Use a fluffy eye shadow brush to apply translucent powder over the entire patch of concealer to set the base makeup.

5. Now “bake” or “cook” your makeup. Use a wedge sponge and dampen it with setting spray. Then, dip the wedge into the translucent powder you used in step 4 to pack the loose powder generously over the area where you applied the concealer. Leave the powder on for 5-10 minutes.

6. Dust it off. Using the same fluffy eye shadow brush from step 4 and a pressed powder. Swirl the fluffy eye shadow brush over the formula and dust away the powder as you add more coverage to blend and avoid any harsh edges.

Setting Spray/Mist: It makes your makeup last either for a really long time and/or the entire day.

Setting spray can also set your foundation instead of a pressed or loose powder or a powder foundation.

Setting spray is especially amazing when it comes to the winter time because your skin can become so so dry. It can kind of help bring a little life back into your face when you apply the setting spray.

Blush: Blush gives you a little flush of color on the face. If you are pale make sure you are careful of the colors of blush that you are getting. It doesn’t REALLY matter what color you get just as long as you use pressed powder or a freshly used beauty blender to make the blush lighter if need be.

Liquid, Loose, Cream, Powder, Cushion, Gel and Whipped

Contour/ Bronzer: Contour/Bronzer adds dimension to the face. It also makes you look like you got some sun.

Warm Undertone= Red and orange and firey undertone

Cool Undertone= Blue, purple and watery tones

Liquid, Cream, Powder,Stick, Whipped & Cushion

Highlighter: Highlighter makes certain parts of the face pop out.

The formulas are Liquid, Cream,Powder, Stick, Pomade, Gel and Mousse.

How to carve out your Eyebrows:

  1. Start by picking up an angled brush and dip it into a brow pomade of your choice. Sculpt out your desired shape, then use the spooly brush to comb through and evenly distribute the product evenly.
  2. Pick up a concealer that is an exact match to your skin tone, and use a flat brush to carve out the top portion of your brow, and square off the beginning.Blend the concealer into the rest of your skin until the line is basically gone. Then pick up the spooly brush again and diffuse the lines at the front portion to mix the powder and concealer, creating a natural-looking gradient.
  3. With the leftover concealer on the brush, sweep a small amount under your arch to define the shape, and blend out using your finger. if you choose to add an additional highlight, I recommend going for one with subtle shimmer, a warm rose gold that flatters all skin tones.
  4. Seal your handiwork in place with a clear or tinted brow gel.

Advantages of carving out your eyebrows:

  1. It makes your eyebrows have a very sharp line all the way around.
  2. It can also make the entire makeup look stand out.
  3. You can also take a dark brown eye shadow and take either a smudger or a angled brush.

A smudger is going to help smoothe the lines out and remove any harsh lines of eyeliner. Also if you want to have an ombre look, and if it has that sponge tip on the top, get it coated with eyebrow pomade or powder, it doesn’t really matter. In addition to that, you can just take it section by section but don’t pack it on because other wise you’re going to look like you have bushy eyebrows when you really don’t.

If you want a thick layer of eyebrow product you can use pomade: Pomade is kind of like a paste.

Things you have watch out for while carving your eyebrows out: You have to make sure you set your concealer with pressed powder, translucent loose powder or just set it when you start applying the eye shadow. However, if you choose to set it with the eye shadow, you would have to do apply the eye shadow right away so the concealer does not crease and set into your fine lines or acne if you have some acne.

Eye-Primer: It helps create a base for the eye shadow so the shadow doesn’t crease. You can also use concealer as eye-primer. It’s a multi-purpose product.

The formulas are Liquid, Cream and Powder.

Eye shadow: It adds dimension to the eyes and a little color to the eyes. It can depend on the color but the eye shadow can make the eyes pop.

The difference between pigments, pressed pigments and foiled shadows:

Ways to prevent fall out from eye shadow: The first thing is to make sure you have either setting spray or water because when you just put an eye shadow on your eye, it will literally flake everywhere so spray a tiny bit of setting spray on the brush then go into the shadow and the flakes won’t go everywhere.

What is a Cut Crease? The cut crease makeup technique defines that line, extending it slightly above the natural fold with a few clever tricks. As such, it shows off and widens your eyes by creating the illusion of added depth. It’ll add more of a precise look and that’s with using a thin tip brush too.

How to do a cut crease

To create a cut crease, you will need to apply eye shadow just above the natural crease of your eyes, and “cut” this new line with concealer or foundation to ensure it appears sharp and “on fleek”.

Steps to do a natural Cut Crease:

  1. Apply primer to the eye area.
  2. Use a warm neutral shadow to define your crease.
  3. Apply concealer or foundation to cut the crease.
  4. Set the concealer with a neutral powder before applying nude eye shadow to your lids.
  5. Line the upper eyelid with brown eyeliner and add a coat of mascara.

The formulas are Powder and Cream

Eye Liner: Eye liner adds a little flair to the eye. Even if the eye has no eye shadow, eye liner will immediately make it look better.

The magic of tape and liquid eyeliner:

Step 1: To begin, take an inch-long piece of tape and it to your hand a few times to dull some of its adhesive power. This will help it from sticking too severely to your delicate eye area.

Step 2: Place the tape underneath your bottom lashes at the outer corner of your eye and angle it towards your temple. Avoid angling the tape towards the end of your brow.

Step 3: Begin sketching at the middle of your upper lash line, which is where the liquid line should begin to thicken. Draw a stripe to the outer corner of your eye using short, dash-like strokes. For precision, it is preferred to use a felt-tip pen. Be sure to place your pinkie finger against your cheek for added stability and control.

Step 4; Using the tape like a straight-edged ruler, continue drawing your line along the tape past the outer corner. Don’t worry if some of the liner bleeds onto the tape….. this will all be removed any way! Messiness isn’t an issue here, but do make sure the liner gradually gets thinner and thinner as you sketch out the line.

Step 5: Remove the tape and proudly reveal in your pristine wing.

Step 6: Finish the line by going back to the middle of your eye and sketching short thin strokes over to the tear duct. By the time the liner reaches the inner corner, the streak should hug the lashes as tightly as possible.

The formulas are Liquid, Cream, Powder, Pencil, Pomade, and Gel

Mascara: It makes the lashes look thick, more precise and longer.

Chap stick: It helps the lips get really smooth.

Lip liner: Lip Liner makes the lips look really smooth and precise.

Lipstick: It adds color in the lips and it also fills in the lips after the lip liner is on.

The formulas are Liquid Lipstick and regular lipstick.

Mixing and matching lipsticks together:

  1. Always be sure to moisturize your lips and make sure that they are nice and smooth. Just so that your lips do not crack and bleed.
  2. Always make sure that the 2 lipsticks are the same formulation. EX: Put a liquid lipstick with another liquid lipstick. If you have on a regular lipstick. Do not put a liquid lipstick on top of that. You can however put a gloss on top of that though.
  3. In addition to that, put thin layers on the lips. Don’t cake either form of lipstick on other wise it will either clump off or peel off and make the lips dry. NEITHER ARE A GOOD CHOICE!!!!!
  4. Also, with applying thin layers of liquid lipstick. When you pull the wand out, make sure that there is barely anything on the wand. It has to be a very light layer/amount.
  5.  DON’T OVERLAP the liquid lipsticks. Apply starting in the center of your upper lip. Then work from the center to the outer edges following the contour of your mouth. Glide across your bottom lip and fill in. When one coat isn’t enough, add another layer but allow for 5-10 seconds to dry and set.

There is a difference between liquid lipstick and lip gloss.

Liquid lipsticks: Begins as a gloss. It drys into a matte finish lipstick. Liquid lipstick lasts all day, where as regular lipstick wears off within 3-4 hours from application.

Tip: Liquid lipstick can be very drying so you want to make sure that when you are in the store, you are in no rush. Make sure you test it on the back of your hand and blend it in with a sponge or finger tips or even a lip brush and just watch if it gets chalky or stays smooth. Also, when putting the liquid lipsticks on your lips. Always put very thin layers (coats) to your lips. DON’T OVER DO IT. ESPECIALLY when you have dry lips it would even look worse. If you put heavy layers of liquid lipsticks on, it will either chip off or become clumpy. NO ONE WANTS THAT!!!!!!! So that is why thin layers is the way to go with the liquid lipsticks. When you do thin layers, make sure the wand is pretty bare and basically has nothing on it because then it won’t be clumpy or chalky. You should also watch for clumpiness in the bottle because the chunkiness from the liquid lipstick bottle could also transfer over to your lips and make your lips look extra dry and cracked.

Lip gloss: it is kind of like a liquid lipstick but it doesn’t dry down into a matte texture. Lip gloss stays wet and it looks very shiny.

BE CAREFUL with different kinds of lip gloss because some can get very gritty or rough on the lips. It can also cause dry lips. It can also just make the lips look patchy.

Cakey makeup in general:

Disclaimer: This is adding onto the information that I put in the tips & tricks up above.

Face: Foundation can get very clumpy after about 1 year. It would make your face break out to the point of looking oily and nobody wants that. When you use a cream foundation, you have to make sure that you use a stippling brush because then it will not be thick and cakey.

Lips: It can always depend on the consistency of the liquid lipstick. If the liquid lipstick is really thin to begin with. Its more likely to dry out and stick to the bottle where if it was a thick consistency it would dry out but you could still get to it whether you put water in it or something to make it thinner and come out of the actual tubing as well as the wand. Now, if it is a regular lipstick, you shouldn’t have to worry about it.

                                                                                        All About The Face

  • Always use a face primer or a moisturizer to A. smooth the skin. B. if you have dry skin it’ll help make it look and feel more healthy.
  • You also have to be aware when you are picking out the moisturizers because it has to be for your skin type/texture
  • As for foundations, you also have to be aware of the color of your skin and the color in the bottle because it may look the same in the bottle as it does on your face but you really don’t want to be the one that gets it and then looks like an OOMPA LOOM PA in the car or any where else.
  • When you apply concealer it has to be a little lighter than your skin tone. Then, it can also act like a highlighter to point out the high points in you face.
  • We jumping to cream contour for a minute. There is an option of doing the cream contour before you set your foundation and concealer. Then do it while your doing your lighter concealer.
  • Now when you get to the powder, you have to decide whether you want to actually do it right or if you just want to cover it all up and not matter how to do it.
  • If you would like to do it right, I recommend putting a thin layer on with either a beauty blender or powder puff or just a regular sponge.

                                                                                           All About The Eyes

  • Eye primer will be great for you when you are doing a cut crease and a very detailed look.
  • Eye primer is also good for pigments or pressed pigments.                                                                                                                                                                                                                         All About The Lips
  • You need chap stick!!!! CHAP STICK WILL ALWAYS BE YOUR BEST FRIEND!!!!!!!!!!
  • Also you need to be aware of the formula of lipstick. If you have a creamy lipstick, you might not want to put it in a pocket where the sun is going to be hitting it all the time because it will most likely melt.
